Our eating habits and schedules vary, but a new study suggests that eating your first meal earlier can benefit your health a lot.

The study, conducted with over 100,000 people from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort, sheds light on the connection between meal timing and the higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

According to the results, eating your breakfast after 9 a.m. could increase the risk of this illness by 59% compared to individuals who have breakfast before 8 a.m.

Why is it important

The results emphasize the importance of proper meal timing in diabetes prevention. Eating breakfast and dinner earlier were associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

Meanwhile, skipping breakfast can negatively impact glucose and lipid control, and also insulin levels, leading to an increased risk of diabetes.

Interestingly, the study also suggests that eating about five times a day is also linked to lower risks of type 2 diabetes.

Moreover, the research highlights the detrimental effects of late dinners, which seem to increase the risk of the same illness.

More about crononutrition

The concept of chrononutrition, which explores the relationship between meals, circadian rhythms, and health, receives further support from these studies. Previous research from the same ISGlobal team had already revealed the link between an early dinner and a reduced risk of breast or prostate cancer.

Understanding the impact of meal timing may offer individuals a better chance of preventing type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases, ultimately contributing to overall health improvement.
