Depressive disorder (also called depression) is a common mental health disorder. It is characterized by long periods of depressed mood or loss of interest in or enjoyment of habitual activities.

How does depression start

The main symptoms are: depressed mood almost daily and most of the day, regardless of the situation; loss of interest and ability to experience pleasure - anhedonia; decreased energy, performance, increased fatigue.

Typical thinking errors of a depressed person: Self-flagellation. The thoughts “I can’t”, “I don’t have a chance”, “I’m not capable of anything”, “I’m disgusting”, “I’m trapped” constantly appear in a person suffering from depression.

What helps prevent depression

Physical activity, a healthy diet, and an optimal amount of sleep (7-9 hours) are significantly associated with a decrease in depressed mood. Screen time and tobacco smoking are associated with an increase in depressed mood.
