Feeding birds can help them survive cold and dark months easier, so it's a great idea!

If you love feeding birds, then you should remember that some foods are actually bad for their health.

Here are some examples of things you shouldn't put into bird feeders.

Bread

While birds can eat bread, it's not very nutritious for them. It can fill them up without providing the essential nutrients they need.

If birds eat too much bread, it can lead to malnutrition. If you do offer bread, make it an occasional treat rather than a primary food source.

Junk Food

Just like with people, junk food isn't good for birds. Avoid feeding them things like chips, cookies, or sugary snacks.

These foods lack the nutrients birds require and can lead to health issues if consumed regularly.

Spoiled Food

Birds, like any animals, should not eat spoiled or old food. Moldy or spoiled food can make them sick.

If you notice food in your feeder has gone bad, remove it and replace it with fresh, safe food.

Processed Meat

Processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, or cold cuts are high in salt and unhealthy for birds.

The excessive salt content can dehydrate them and lead to kidney issues.

Stick to bird-friendly foods like seeds, fruits, and insects if you want to provide protein.

Fruits with Pits

Be cautious when feeding birds fruits with pits, such as cherries or peaches.

While the fleshy part of the fruit is safe for birds, the pit inside can be a choking hazard.

It's better to offer pitted or seedless fruit or remove the pit before providing the fruit.

Feeding birds with a well-balanced diet of birdseed, fresh water, and natural, unprocessed foods like seeds, fruits, and insects is the best way to support their health and well-being.

Being mindful of what you offer can help you make sure that your feathered friends stay healthy and happy.
