People can affect and change the world around them a lot - and selection is a great example of that.

For instance, now we have hundreds of cat breeds, and some of them have pretty short hair, which isn't how they used to look originally.

Let's find out how people can affect cat breeds - it's actually pretty exciting!

Choosing the right cats

Long ago, people noticed some cats had shorter fur naturally.

They liked this trait because it meant less shedding and less grooming.

So, they decided to find cats with short fur and use them to make more short-haired kittens.

Then goes mating

They took these short-haired cats and made them have babies with other short-haired cats.

When these cats had kittens, they looked at the kittens' fur to see if it was short like their parents.

Over and over again

They kept doing this over many generations.

Each time, they picked the kittens with the shortest fur to be the parents of the next generation.

This way, they made sure that the kittens would have short fur too.

It's time to name a breed

After many generations, they had a group of cats that all had short fur.

These cats were now considered a new breed, like the Siamese or the Persian.

Conclusion

Selection works amazingly almost every time - people can change lots of things around them in just a few decades!
