Our ability to focus on tasks is influenced by things like motivation and alertness.

It can be hard to stay focused, especially when a task is boring or repetitive.

A team of scientists conducted a study on attention maintenance.

How it was tested

Setting specific goals can significantly improve our ability to stay focused, especially in activities like studying or working, where a lack of focus can result in poor performance.

Although humans are generally good at tasks requiring sustained attention, distractions can cause lapses in focus.

Common distractions include thoughts about personal matters or reacting to external stimuli.

Lapses in attention can have some small consequences, like forgetting to forward an email, or major consequences, like a surgeon forgetting a vital step during a surgery.

Sustaining attention is challenging, as it fluctuates over short and long intervals.

The experiment involved more than 100 people completing reaction time tasks.

Individuals who were given specific goals to pursue demonstrated improved sustained attention and fewer attention lapses compared to those in the control condition.

The results suggest that goal-setting techniques can be effective in helping people maintain attention over time.
