Sleep is important for both mental and physical health. The quality of your sleep can also be affected by your diet.

Research results

According to a new study published in the journal Obesity, diet can affect sleep quality.

The researchers divided the participants into two groups with different diets:

High in sugar, saturated fat and processed foods.

With less sugar, fat and processed foods.

Moreover, the group had normal sleep habits and at least 7-9 hours of rest per day.

Participants ate such foods for a certain time before bedtime.

Each volunteer adhered to the prescribed diet, tracked changes in sleep quality and their well-being.

After that, the scientists conducted a survey of the group in the sleep lab.

The sleep duration of the participants was the same, but the quality of sleep was different.

In the junk food group, deep sleep was less restorative.

In addition, the effect remained even when the participants were switched to the same diet.

So, the group that ate foods high in sugar and fat had more superficial sleep and felt unrested and sleepy in the morning.
