The issue of heavy metals in our food has become more urgent because of the high levels of metals in babies' food.

Recently, metals were also found in kids' fruit puree pouches.

Two new experiments shed light on the ties between heavy metals in food and the risk of cancer and various other health problems.

Why it's dangerous

Plants can absorb various metals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium from contaminated soil, air, and water.

These metals can end up in common foods we consume, such as rice, cereals, nuts, and spinach.

The scientists gathered data from various sources, including food and water samples, to understand how these metals affect our health.

They looked at both cancer-related and other effects and used a special scoring system to assess the significance of the links between heavy metal presence and each effect.

Their results highlight that consuming inorganic arsenic through food in the US could lead to more than 6,000 cases of bladder and lung cancers, as well as over 7,000 cases of skin cancer annually.

Certain foods like rice, wheat, and leafy green vegetables, were found to carry a higher risk of cancer tied to heavy metal exposure.

Why it's important

These findings have huge results for food safety regulations, public health policies, and also consumer awareness.

It is vital to address the issue of heavy metal contamination in our food supply to protect our health and well-being.

Previously, we talked about red onions.
