Shelter animals need love and support that they can only get by adoption.

While dog adoptions have become more popular recently, lots of people still prefer to buy dogs instead of adopting them.

A team of specialists seems to have found a new method to fix that.

Finding new home

Returning home to a chorus of furry joy from your dog after a long day is heartwarming.

Researchers are on a mission to make more shelter dogs experience this love and happiness in adoptive homes.

Their study found that implementing shorter-term fostering programs at animal shelters significantly improves canine adoptions.

Spending time with a dog outside the kennel, even for a few hours or a night in a foster caregiver's home, reduces stress and enhances adoption prospects.

The researchers discovered that brief outings and short-term fostering increased the likelihood of adoption by five and more than 14 times, respectively.

Why it's important

These programs prove impactful for shelter dogs, offering them a chance at a loving home and a brighter future.

The study was funded by Maddie's Fund, a foundation dedicated to enhancing the well-being of companion animals.

The research not only benefits shelter dogs but also highlights the importance of community involvement and resource support for successful programs.
