Garden design trends can evolve over time, and certain styles that were once popular might fall out of favor as new ideas and aesthetics emerge.

Some of these outdated trends are just about garden decorations, while other trends are about convenience, or even ecology.

Here are some garden design styles and elements that have become less trendy in recent years.

Excessive Formality

Highly formal, rigidly structured gardens with tightly manicured hedges, symmetrical designs, and intricate patterns have become less popular.

Many people now prefer more relaxed and natural-looking garden spaces.

Monoculture Lawns

Large expanses of perfectly manicured lawns with minimal biodiversity are less popular due to environmental concerns.

People are now more inclined to create gardens that support local ecosystems, attract pollinators, and feature a mix of plant species.

Overly Ornate Features

Excessive use of ornate and decorative elements, such as elaborate fountains, gazing balls, and overly intricate statues, has become less trendy.

Many contemporary gardens emphasize simplicity and focus on the beauty of natural materials and plantings.

High-Maintenance Landscapes

Gardens that require constant upkeep, such as complex topiaries or high-maintenance flower beds, have fallen out of favor.

Many garden enthusiasts are now seeking low-maintenance and sustainable landscape solutions.

Strictly Ornamental Plants

Gardens that focus solely on ornamental plants without consideration for edibles, herbs, or plants that have ecological value are becoming less common.
