When your plant becomes bigger, you should transplant it to help it grow bigger.

While transplantation is not a complicated process, you should know some basic rules to make it more successful.

Let's find out more about successful plant transplantation.

Water the plant a day before

Give the plant a good, deep watering a day before transplanting. This ensures that the soil is moist and will hold together better when you move the plant.

Use a bigger root ball

When digging up the plant, try to keep as many roots as possible. A larger root ball helps the plant adapt more easily to its new location. The general rule is to keep a root ball that's at least as wide as the plant's canopy.

Handle the roots gently

Be extremely careful not to damage the roots while transplanting. Gently lift the plant and its root ball from the soil, treating the roots like fragile threads. Avoid pulling or tugging on the plant.

Trim overgrown roots

If the plant has many long roots, it's acceptable to trim them slightly to fit into the new hole. Use clean and sharp pruning shears to make clean cuts. Focus on the longest or damaged roots, but don't overdo it.

Add mycorrhizal fungi

Mycorrhizal fungi are beneficial microorganisms that can enhance root growth and nutrient uptake. You can sprinkle a mycorrhizal powder on the root ball before planting it in the new hole, following the product instructions.

Water thoroughly after transplanting

After placing the plant in its new location, water it thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots. The water will eliminate air pockets and ensure good soil-to-root contact.

Provide temporary shade

If the weather is hot and sunny, protect the transplanted plant from direct sunlight for a few days. You can use a garden cloth or an improvised shade like a cardboard box with one side open to provide shade.

That's how you can increase the chances of a successful plant transplant and help your plant thrive in its new location.
