In summer, lots of people can see little annoying insects flying around their kitchen sinks.

Fruit flies are commonly found around kitchen sinks because they are attracted to decaying organic matter and moisture, which are abundant in this area.

There are several reasons why fruit flies might be present around your kitchen sink.

Food residue

Fruit flies are drawn to food residues left on dishes, glasses, and utensils that are not thoroughly cleaned or rinsed in the sink.

Even small amounts of sugary or organic substances can attract these tiny insects.

Overripe fruits and vegetables

If you have overripe fruits or vegetables on the kitchen counter or in the sink, they can become a breeding ground for fruit flies.

As the fruits or vegetables start to decay, they release a sweet odor that attracts the flies.

Moisture

Fruit flies require a humid environment to lay their eggs and develop.

The kitchen sink, especially if there are leaks or damp areas, can provide the ideal conditions for them to thrive.

Drain buildup

The drain of your kitchen sink can accumulate organic debris and grime over time.

This decomposing matter can serve as a food source for fruit fly larvae and attract adult flies to lay eggs.

Garbage disposal

If you have a garbage disposal in your sink, food particles can get trapped and start to decompose, attracting fruit flies.
