Silver turns black due to the chemical reaction of the metal with sulfur compounds. As a result, silver sulfide (Ag2S) is formed, which is similar to a thin layer of soot on the surface of the metal. Some sulfur compounds are found in hard-boiled eggs, mayonnaise, and mustard.

What to do to shine silver

Ammonia

To restore shine to silver items, try ammonia. First, wash the products in soapy water. Then add 5-7 drops of ammonia there and leave for 10-20 minutes. Then rinse with water and dry with a flannel cloth.

Salt and baking soda

Boiling in a liquid of salt and soda - for this it is enough to stir a tablespoon of salt and soda in several liters of water. It is necessary to boil the products for no more than half an hour, then they must be thoroughly rinsed and wiped dry.

Now high-grade forks, spoons and knives are coated with a layer of rhodium by galvanization. As a result of this treatment, the surface of table silver becomes more shiny, durable, resistant to physical and chemical influences.
