Some food can cause heartburn - an unpleasant feeling that can easily spoil your day.

While some foods are well-known because of it, others are less obvious, because they only cause heartburn in some individuals.

Here are some examples of foods that people with sensitive stomachs should avoid.

Mint

Minty foods, such as peppermint and spearmint, are often associated with soothing digestion.

However, they can relax the muscle that separates the stomach from the esophagus, allowing stomach acid to flow back up.

Chocolate

While it's a favorite treat for many, chocolate can relax the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle preventing acid reflux), leading to heartburn.

Fried and Fatty Foods

Greasy delights like french fries, fried chicken, and hamburgers are known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easier for stomach acid to cause heartburn.

Coffee and Tea

Both of these beverages contain caffeine, which can stimulate your stomach to produce more acid, potentially causing heartburn.

Alcohol

Alcohol can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easier for stomach acid to splash back into your esophagus, leading to heartburn.

Spicy Foods

Very spicy dishes, such as hot wings or heavily seasoned Mexican or Indian cuisine, can irritate the esophagus and lead to heartburn.

Onions

Onions, especially when eaten raw or in large quantities, can cause heartburn in some individuals.

Garlic

Garlic, similar to onions, contains compounds that may relax the lower esophageal sphincter and contribute to heartburn.

Not everyone will experience heartburn from these foods.

However, if you regularly notice heartburn after consuming these items, it may be helpful to reduce your intake or be mindful of your portion sizes.

Making dietary adjustments can often help manage heartburn symptoms.
