Ornithologists at the Loro Parque Foundation research station on the largest Canary island of Tenerife are studying three endangered species of macaw parrots.

Features of macaw parrots

Macaws have the strongest beak on Earth, which serves them as an excellent weapon against various predators.

The size of the bird can reach one meter in length including the tail.

There are also smaller representatives of this genus.

In the wild, these parrots are common in Central and South America.

Why have some macaws gone extinct in the wild

The blue macaw's homeland, an area of scrub and thorn forests in northeastern Brazil, has been destroyed by human activity.

A study has found that the Brazilian bird has finally disappeared from the wild.

The reason for this is said to be massive deforestation, which was home to blue macaws.

Human activity is the main cause of almost all recent species extinctions.

Now their number has exceeded 500 individuals, but they are still not found in the wild.

These birds are bred in Brazil and Qatar.

Ornithologists plan to release several individuals into the wild in the future.
