While all narcissists might seem the same, they can actually be pretty much different, and their age and gender matter.
A new study claims that older female narcissists are way different from young male ones, and vice versa.
Let's find out more about that.
The research
A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology explores age and gender differences in narcissism, challenging stereotypes.
Researchers examined data from over 250,000 participants across 42 studies.
They found that men scored slightly higher than women on narcissism measures, particularly in agentic and antagonistic aspects.
Age matters more
However, the gender differences were statistically small.
Narcissism tends to decline from young adulthood to middle age, possibly due to decreased emphasis on status and increased concern for others as people age.
Middle-aged and older adults showed similar levels of narcissism.
Age-related changes in personality traits like extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism were found to influence narcissism.
Overall, age and gender only modestly correlate with narcissistic traits, indicating that other factors play a more significant role.
