Perhaps you've been petting dogs the wrong way all along. Many touches are uncomfortable for animals.

Why you can't always pet your dog

Before petting someone else's dog, ask the person's permission. Not all people or animals want this.

For example, a dog may be in a period of adaptation and experience severe stress when seeing unfamiliar people.

Other pets may have aggressive behavior that they cannot yet control.

Therefore, interacting with someone else's dog may be unsafe for both you and the animal.

How to pet a dog correctly

All dogs don't like to be petted on the head.

Firstly, you should not hover over your dog; this can be perceived as a threat or danger.

Approach your pet from the side; wait until the dog approaches you on its own.

Secondly, dogs don't like being patted on the head.

This is an extremely sensitive place; animals perceive patting on the head and the desire to touch in this way as a threat.

Try observing your dog's reaction when your hand is on your dog's head.

The animal will show signs of discomfort - flattened ears, heavy breathing with an open mouth, restless eyes, shuddering.

The animal may also tilt its head or move your hand away.

As a rule, dogs love it when you stroke their withers, chin, chest, and sides.

Under no circumstances should you touch the paws or sides, the dog will not like it.

Stroking the belly is an individual matter that depends on the dog itself.
