Seasons change slowly, but each season requires some preparation.

It applies to house cleaning as well - and that's why lots of people do big house cleaning before winter.

Here are a few tips on how to make your house ready for long and dark winter days.

Make a Plan

Start by making a plan of what areas you want to clean and prioritize.

Break down the tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, such as cleaning one room at a time.

Declutter

Begin by decluttering each room. Remove any items that you no longer need or use. Consider donating or selling them.

Dusting

Dust all surfaces, including furniture, shelves, and decorations. Use a microfiber cloth or a duster to trap dust effectively.

Vacuuming and Mopping

Vacuum or sweep the floors in each room to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Pay extra attention to corners and under furniture.

Clean Windows

Clean the windows inside and out using a window cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar.

Wipe them with a lint-free cloth or newspaper for streak-free results.

Freshen Up Fabrics

Wash or dry clean curtains, drapes, and bedding. Vacuum upholstered furniture and use fabric fresheners or baking soda to eliminate odors.

Organize Closets and Storage Areas

Sort through your closets and storage areas. Donate or discard items you no longer need. Organize the remaining items for easier access and storage.

Check Smoke Alarms and Filters

Test your smoke alarms and replace batteries if necessary. Clean or replace air filters in your HVAC system to ensure clean and efficient airflow.

Tackle Outdoor Spaces

If weather permits, clean your outdoor spaces. Sweep the porch, patio, or deck, and tidy up the yard.

Put away summer items and prepare your outdoor furniture for winter storage.
