Even the smallest dogs can have a habit of barking at the front door the second they hear the smallest noise from here.

This habit is usually a part of their protective behavior, so it might be hard to get rid of it - but it's not impossible!

Here are a few tips on how you can train your dog to be quieter and calmer.

Identify the Trigger

Understanding your dog's triggers is the first step in curbing excessive barking.

Is it the sound of the doorbell, the sight of strangers, or a combination of both?

Take note of specific cues that set off the barking symphony.

Decoy Doorbell Drills

Simulate doorbell scenarios to desensitize your dog.

Record the doorbell sound on your phone and play it at varying volumes during playtime or mealtime.

Reward your furry friend with treats and positive reinforcement when they remain calm, gradually increasing the intensity of the doorbell sound.

Establish a Quiet Zone

Create a designated "quiet zone" away from the front door. Train your dog to retreat to this area upon hearing the doorbell.

Use treats, toys, or a comfortable bed to make this zone enticing.

Consistently reinforce this behavior to build a positive association with the quiet zone.

Introduce the Doorbell Distraction

When your dog has mastered the quiet zone, introduce controlled distractions during doorbell simulations.

Engage your dog with a favorite toy or puzzle feeder to shift their focus away from the doorbell sound.

Reward calm behavior generously.

Polite Greetings Protocol

Teach your dog an alternative behavior to barking when someone arrives. Train them to sit or offer a paw as a polite greeting.

Reinforce this behavior with treats and positive attention. This redirection not only discourages barking but also promotes good manners.
