The hedgehog is an unusual pet that is easy to care for. In the article, we will talk about feeding this small animal.
What diet should a hedgehog have
It is enough to include animal meat in the diet: beef, veal, and turkey, chicken. Offal is also suitable, such as chicken liver, hearts, and stomachs. It is better if the meat is raw.
Among the first five components should be meat (chicken, turkey, lamb, beef), as well as fruits and vegetables, fat content should not exceed 8-12%.
Many breeders recommend feeding hedgehogs premium dry cat or dog food.
The composition of such feeds should not contain any starchy foods, such as corn or potatoes, as well as any substitutes and dyes.
What Not to Eat
Foods that should not be given to hedgehogs:
- Onion and garlic;
- Various exotic fruits (all citrus fruits, pineapples, avocados, mangoes and others);
- Dried fruits (due to poor patency);
- Grapes (opportunity to choke on the seeds);
- Seeds and nuts (because they are very fatty and a hedgehog will get an upset stomach);
- Fast food products;
In their natural habitat, the diet of hedgehogs consists of beetles, worms and snails. Sometimes a hedgehog can diversify its menu with frogs, lizards, bird eggs, mice.
