Butterflies can make your garden pretty - you just need to know how to attract them.
Some things attract these insects, some things repel them - so if you want them to live in your garden, you need to know some rules.
Here are some of them.
Plant butterfly-friendly flowers
Opt for brightly colored flowers with shallow, tubular or flat blooms, as they are easier for butterflies to access.
Plant these flowers in clusters or groups to make them more visible and appealing to butterflies.
Provide a water source
Place shallow dishes or containers with a moistened sponge or pebbles in your garden.
Ensure that the water source is not too deep, as butterflies need a safe place to land and access the water.
Create sunlit areas
Butterflies are attracted to sunny spots where they can bask and warm their wings.
Clear any obstructions that might block sunlight, such as tall trees or dense foliage.
Incorporate host plants
Different butterfly species have specific host plant preferences, so research the butterflies native to your region and include the appropriate host plants.
For example, monarch butterflies require milkweed plants as their host.
Provide shelter and resting spots
Butterflies need sheltered areas to rest, roost, and seek protection from predators and harsh weather conditions.
Plant shrubs, tall grasses, or create butterfly houses and shelters in your garden to offer suitable resting places for butterflies.
Extend the blooming season
Plant a variety of flowers that bloom at different times throughout the year.
This provides a continuous food source for butterflies and ensures they visit your garden across multiple seasons.
