Our diet can significantly affect your health, but what about our cognitive abilities and skills?
A new study shows that it does - and what's even more important, it plays a huge role for older people.
Let's find out more about what they've found.
How it was discovered
Eating a Mediterranean diet helps older people avoid memory loss, says a study in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.
Led by Mireia Urpí-Sardá, the study looked at 840 people over 65 for twelve years.
They made a special measure to see how well participants followed the Mediterranean diet.
The study showed that those who stuck to the diet had a lower chance of memory loss as they got older.
This helps us know more about how the food we eat can affect how our brains work.
The study used a special scorecard based on blood tests to measure how well people followed the diet.
The results suggest that following a Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, veggies, and healthy fats, could keep our brains healthier as we age.
Why it's important
It's better to keep your diet healthy since you're young - that's how you can still be healthy and have normal cognitive skills later in life.
Therefore, dieting isn't just about maintaining normal body weight or being in a good shape - it's about your brain functioning too.
