The team of scientists has developed a new model of the human brain called organoids.

These organoids can generate the major cell types found in the cerebellum, which is important for movement, cognition, and emotion.

Specifically, they successfully grew Purkinje cells that have the features of functional neurons.

How it was discovered

This is the first time such human cells have been grown in this way.

Understanding the biology of cerebellar development and disorders can be advanced using this model, which may lead to new therapeutic interventions.

The cerebellum helps us move and think. Problems with Purkinje cells can cause disorders like autism and ataxia.

The other neurons in the organoids worked together in circuits, showing they were functioning properly.

The organoids also created special cells that are linked to medulloblastoma, a common brain tumor in children.

This can help scientists study and find treatments for this type of cancer.

Why it's important

The organoids can develop anatomical features similar to normal brain development.

This model provides a platform for discovering new treatments for various diseases.

Previously, we talked about meditation and napping.
