If you want to help local birds to survive cold months, then you should make a bird feeder and put some seeds, nuts, or other bird food inside.

Squirrels often try to steal bird food, so you should try to protect it from them. But how can you do it?

Here are some tips on what you can do.

Squirrel-Proof Feeders

Invest in bird feeders specifically designed to be squirrel-proof.

These feeders usually have mechanisms like weight-sensitive perches that close off access to the food when a squirrel lands on them.

Some have cages that keep squirrels out while allowing smaller birds to feed.

Install a Baffle

Attach a squirrel baffle to the feeder pole or hang it above the feeder.

A baffle is a cone or dome-shaped barrier that prevents squirrels from climbing up to the feeder.

Make sure the baffle is placed low enough to deter squirrels from jumping over it.

Hang It High

Position the bird feeder at least 5 to 6 feet above the ground.

Squirrels are skilled climbers, but having the feeder at a significant height makes it more challenging for them to access.

Distance from Trees and Buildings

Hang the feeder away from trees, buildings, or anything else squirrels could use as launching points.

Squirrels are excellent jumpers, so keep the feeder away from objects that can aid their acrobatics.

Grease the Pole

Apply a layer of cooking oil or petroleum jelly to the feeder pole.

Squirrels won't be able to grip the slippery surface, making it difficult for them to climb.

Safflower Seeds

Fill your feeder with safflower seeds. While many birds love safflower, squirrels usually dislike it.

This can help deter them from your feeder while still attracting various bird species.

That's how you can create a bird-friendly space in your yard while minimizing the intrusion of squirrels into your bird feeder.
