Here’s a concise guide on how to grow ginger in your garden.
Select a sheltered garden bed with filtered light or bright shade.
Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent ginger rot.
In cooler climates, grow ginger in a pot that can be moved indoors during cold weather.
Mix in handfuls of Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.
This enriches the soil with organic matter, promoting healthy growth.
Plant ginger during spring to allow for 8 months of warm-weather growth before harvest.
Obtain ginger rhizomes (pieces of ginger)
Cut the rhizome into 3 cm long pieces, ensuring each piece has several “eyes” (buds) where shoots will develop.
Let the rhizomes cure (dry out) for a few days.
Plant the rhizomes 5-10 cm deep in the soil.
If planting multiple pieces, space them 20 cm apart.
Water the ginger well and maintain consistent soil moisture.
Once shoots appear, protect them from snails and slugs using Yates Snail & Slug Bait.
Remember these steps, and soon you’ll have fresh ginger ready for your culinary adventures!
