Painting over wallpapers: Interior tips

If your house needs a makeover, then you can simply repaint your wallpapers.

In some cases, this approach can save you time and money, because you won't have to level the walls.

Here's how you can do it.

Repair any damage

Check for any loose or damaged wallpaper edges. If you find any, use wallpaper glue to stick them back down. 

Repair any tears or holes with spackling paste or filler, and smooth it out.

Primer is key

Apply a coat of primer to the wallpaper. 

This helps the paint adhere better and prevents the wallpaper pattern from showing through. Let the primer dry thoroughly.

Choose the right paint

Use water-based latex paint. It works well for this job. Oil-based paints can cause wallpaper to peel.

Paint with care

Use a paint roller or brush to apply the paint evenly. Start with a thin coat, and allow it to dry completely. 

Then add another coat if needed. Don't use too much paint at once, as it may make the wallpaper soggy.

Avoid excessive moisture

Be careful not to soak the wallpaper. Excessive moisture can cause it to peel or bubble. 

Paint with a light touch and let each coat dry before applying the next.

Be patient

Allow the paint to dry completely between coats. This may take a few hours or more, depending on the type of paint and humidity.

Finish with a sealant

To protect your painted wallpaper, apply a clear, water-based sealant or varnish. This adds a protective layer and makes the surface easier to clean.

Painting over wallpaper is not always the best solution, and it's usually better to remove the wallpaper if you can. 

But if you choose to paint over it, these steps can help you do it properly.
