Wood is a beautiful natural material, and it can be quite long-lasting, so you can often see wooden winter frames.
The problem is, natural wood can slightly shrink and expand because of the temperature shifts.
If your wooden window frames don't close, then there are a few things you can do.
Identify the problem
Check the wooden frames and see if there are any visible gaps or areas where the frame is not aligned properly when closed.
Inspect the weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is a material that helps seal gaps and prevent drafts.
Examine the weatherstripping around the frame to see if it is damaged, worn out, or needs replacement.
Repair or replace weatherstripping
If the weatherstripping is damaged, remove it carefully and replace it with a new one.
Measure the dimensions accurately and choose weatherstripping that fits snugly to ensure a proper seal.
Seal gaps with caulk
If there are small gaps or cracks between the wooden frame and the wall, you can use caulk to seal them.
Apply a bead of caulk along the gaps and smooth it out with a caulk tool or your finger.
Adjust the hinges and latch
Sometimes, the issue may be due to misaligned hinges or a faulty latch.
Check if the hinges are loose or need adjustment.
Tighten any loose screws or make necessary alignment adjustments.
Ensure that the latch aligns properly with the strike plate.
Consider using draft stoppers
If there are persistent drafts coming from the bottom of the door, you can use draft stoppers or door sweeps.
These can be attached to the bottom of the door to create a seal and prevent cold air from entering.
Use window film
For windows that are particularly drafty, you can apply window film to provide an extra layer of insulation.
