It's often hard to help your child with obesity, because kids don't often understand the reasons, and you want to make them happy as a parent.

Meanwhile, a study from Karolinska Institutet found that treating obesity in young children is effective both in the short term and long term.

Let's find out why you should fight obesity in children early.

Researching children with obesity

Scientists followed over 170 children in Sweden who were diagnosed with obesity.

In the standard treatment group, they had meetings with doctors and dietitians focusing on diet and exercise.

The parental support groups didn't involve the children; instead, they helped parents promote healthy lifestyles in a positive way.

Paulina Nowicka, the lead researcher, explained that these conversations with parents focused on setting boundaries, teaching kids new behaviors, and communicating with others in the children's lives, like preschools and neighbors.

Why the study is unique

This study is unique because it followed children for a more extended period, not just six months or a year.

The results showed that all three groups of children improved their weight status and reduced their obesity.

The children whose parents received parental support and follow-up calls had the best results, including better blood lipid and glucose levels.

Why it's important

Professor Nowicka emphasized that most parents know what to feed their children, but dealing with a child who loves food or is always hungry can be challenging.

It's crucial to establish a clear routine at home and avoid making food a taboo or using it as a reward.

Early intervention can help prevent the need for extreme measures like bariatric surgery later on.
