Approximately one in three people is overweight for various reasons. In the article we will tell you how obesity affects mental health.

Research results

Obese patients are more likely to be diagnosed with psychiatric diagnoses than non-obese patients, according to a new study published in the scientific journal Translational Psychiatry.

The data was obtained from the Austrian National Register of Stationary Services and analyzed from 1997 to 2014. In total, the study analyzed data from 161,185 obese patients and 3,006,526 non-obese patients.

In addition to mental problems, physical problems are often observed: diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, sleep disturbances.

The highest percentage was among nicotine disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, eating disorder, and personality disorder.
