Nowadays, some people use AI technologies to generate messages they then send to their friends and partners when they can't find the right words.

While this approach seemed to be easy and effective at first, it seems that it can actually destroy your relationships.

A new study shows why it might actually be a quite bad idea.

How it was tested

Using AI to help write messages to friends might not be the best idea, according to a new study.

The research discovered that when people knew their friend used AI to compose a message, they perceived it as less effort compared to a message written by the friend themselves.

This perception affected the satisfaction and certainty about the relationship.

The study, conducted by Bingjie Liu from The Ohio State University, involved 208 adults who were instructed to write messages to a fictional friend named Taylor in various scenarios.

Participants who received a reply that was AI-assisted rated it as less appropriate, leading to lower satisfaction and increased uncertainty about the friendship.

It's important to know

The study suggests that people value the effort put into personal messages and may feel relationships are compromised when shortcuts, such as using AI, are perceived.
