While many people think that the school years were the happiest in their lives, it's not like that for everyone - and it's as true now as it was a few decades ago.

Despite changes in school culture over the years, a recent study shows that certain things haven't changed – life can be tough for middle school students who aren't considered attractive or athletic.

Let's find out more about the effects of being unpopular at school.

A unique study on school popularity and attractiveness

The research reveals that students who aren't seen as attractive or athletic tend to become less popular over the school year, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and even problems with alcohol.

In simpler terms, if kids don't fit the mold of being good-looking or skilled in sports, their peers may not like them as much, and this can lead to loneliness and unhealthy behaviors like drinking alcohol.

This study also challenges some old ideas about these issues being more of a problem for boys or girls.

It turns out that both boys and girls can face the same challenges when they're not seen as attractive or athletic.

The research involved 580 middle school students aged 10 to 13.

They were asked about their classmates who were good at sports, really good looking, or unpopular.

They also talked about how often they felt lonely and how often they drank alcohol to the point of feeling drunk in the past month.

Why it's important

The study suggests that teachers can help by creating a classroom atmosphere where being different is okay and where other qualities besides looks and athleticism are valued.

Also, parents can support their children in making friends because having friends can make kids feel less lonely.
